Tulipmania – Rediscovered (Part 1) – GBTB, SG (2016)

The annual Tulips display at Gardens by the Bay is back. This is a yearly affair at the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay. And it usually happens during the Tulip season. The Tulips on display are all air flown in from Holland.

Some history about Tulips:
Tulips were originally wild flowers found growing in Central Asia and first cultivated by the Turks (then Ottoman Empire) back in 1,000BC. The flower were introduced in the Westen Europe and the Netherlands in the 17th century by Carolus Clusius, a famous biologist from Vienna. In the 1590’s he became the director of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, the oldest botanical garden of Europe, founded in 1587. He was hired by the University of Leiden to research medicinal plants and while doing so he got some bulbs from Turkey from his friend Ogier Ghiselain de Busbecq, the ambassador of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). He had seen the beautiful flower, called tulip after the Turkish word for turban, grow in the palace gardens and sent a few to Clusius for his garden in Leiden. He planted them and this was the start of the amazing bulb fields we can see today. (Source: http://www.kokachi.com/tulip.html)

So as you step into the Flower Dome rows and rows of Tulips awaits you…

Some of the tulips have started to bloom on the day I visited the showcase. And the tulip fragrance seems to cover the entire dome. It was a nice early evening stroll before heading for dinner. A very uplifting one, while on the consolation of this visit. I gotten to see the sakura trees which were flown in from Japan too. Prior to Tulipmania showcase, there was a 2 week display of sakura trees at the flower dome.

As the Tulips arrive, the Sakura tree says goodbye.

Love what you Love: Though it is my first time looking at the Tulips, I feel welcomed by the flowers in the nice simple floral display set up. It brings the harmonising calmness and myself closer to understanding Turkey Culture. I was in Istanbul last March, but did not really get to see Tulips…

Find your Inner Joy: The flower dome has always been one of the few places where it is worth multiple visits. It is even more so when you have a Friends of the Gardens pass. That aside, looking at nature in a greenhouse is a different experience, and you don’t always have the time or saved up enough to get to travel far and wide. So this is a possible to consider for some Inner Joy experience looking at exotic flowers and experiences.

Peace where the heart is: A evening walk in the flower dome with not so crowded crowd can be a heart pleasing experience. Consider this a new hangout if you have no pollen allergies.
