Popcorn [At Cafe 6]
While this is fresh off my mind, thought of sharing my own views about this movie. Took time to catch it at the theatre with the HSBC movie card as this movie is only screening at Golden Village Theatres in Singapore. Not sure when it will be ending the run, but the timing seems very limited.
While I shall spare the details of any spoilers, the movie begins with a cafe setting – just like how some movies likes to tell a story in the flashback.
PLOT FOR AT CAFE 6 (from GV website)
Miss Liang’s car broke down after work in a rainy night. The coffee shop owner helps her and invites her to his shop named Café 6. When he knows Miss Liang has a fight with her boyfriend that is overseas, he shares the story that happened in the summer of 1996…
At that time, Guan Min-lü and his good friend Xiao Bo-zhi always hang out together. Min-lü is secretly in love with Li Xin-rui. And Bo-zhi likes Xin-rui’s best friend, Cai Xin-yi. They share the shining young days together. However, they need to face reality, can they maintain their friendship after their high school graduation?
As the story progresses on, the movie explores the various themes of friendship, relationship, family, distance, love… While it was emotional to some extend for myself, especially when I saw how the lead was reflecting about how much his mum cared for him and how much he like the girl yet he is did not have the courage to let her know. How the various themes evolved through the movie as well as how each theme is being brought out. It is truly a growing up process that sometimes, we might overlook certain aspects of our lives, only until something happens to us that we slow down our footsteps and relook at what we have done so far.
One of the theme explored was about him growing up in the single family, by his mum a Nurse who works shift work to take care of him. While that alone strike a cord within myself, what was more intense was the exploration of parental love for the child. Though sidelined by the fact that the main lead was prioritising more time with his girlfriend.
Another was about the vows they made that came through despite all the odds and the ending of the movie after the credits roll – so do stay till end of the credit roll to see the final bits of the show.
