Popcorn – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
The latest series of JK Rowling’s Wizarding World continues with the new instalment of movies pre-Harry Potter. While earlier this year the 8th Harry Potter book was published and the opening of Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood has brought about additional interest to the series. The magic never stops, it continues with the first of a series of five movies around the pre-Harry Potter era. As the title suggests, it is similar to the book which became a textbook being studied by students of Hogwarts.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident… were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. (Quote from Golden Village Website)
First look at the movie, it brings us back to with the soundtrack that was played during the opening of the Harry Potter movies. And as the movie opens up to New York where the movie is set in, we see where Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) is located. Also, it brings out the strange encounters that happen before Newt steps on shore to New York.
The movie develops gradually with twists to the plots which kind of resembles how the previous Harry Potter movies unfold itself in a rich story telling manner. It is like looking for clues that engage you at every turn of how one story links to another. And how each character is interwoven together like patch-work, and it never fails to amaze us how fascinating the fantastic beasts are.
Their relationships also builds up over the course of the entire movie up till the end where they caught the mysterious force that is wreaking havoc in the city, destroys most of it and last but not least, reverse the damage done to New York City and reveal the mastermind behind all this issues. The New York City was repaired magically by the special potion that was mixed with the rain to clean up the memories of the No-Maj (termed Muggles in U.K.).
The movie somehow brought about some personal after thought about the struggle we see where the minorities are divided between coming out about or keeping in the closet. It’s an indirect reflection on the society we are in today where inclusion is still hostilities going on around various social groups and norms.
Running parallel to the movie showing in Singapore, the Singapore Philatelic Museum is having a Harry Potter theme exhibition. (More info at a later time.) Also, there is a special set of Production costume and prop on display at Bugis Junction mall.
